Happy Lunar New Year!
To celebrate the year of the monkey we intend to feature a couple of our favorite Chinese spots around town.
First up: Mission Chinese Food
This is not your grandparents Chinese spot.
This San Francisco transplant originally moved into a tiny and quirky Orchard St. basement where one of the bathroom stalls served as a shrine to Twin Peaks and Laura Palmer, including the Twin Peaks theme song being piped in over the bathroom speakers.
For those of us that got to eat at that surrealist den of dining debauchery before NYC inspectors decided to shut it down, Danny Bowien’s new space on East Broadway might feel like a bit of a let down. What it really is though is an evolution.
No longer in a dingy basement but now a proper (yet still raucous) dining room, the kitchen, headed up by executive chef Angela Dimayuga, continues to produce innovative and often off the wall takes on Szechuan cuisine. Such as the beggars duck which offers up a duck confit baked in a clay brick which you have to break apart at the table, or Josephina’s House Special Chicken – a whole chicken stuffed with sausage, raisins, soft cooked eggs and cheese.
The drinks menu is as absurd as it used to be but now also has a very eclectic wine list to go along with some of the offerings.
And if you’re not quite feeling Chinese food don’t worry they’ve got you covered with pizza, freshly baked in their wood burning oven.
